Previously a French chef and a silkscreen printer, Wataru Igarashi took up photography under the mentorship of photojournalist Kikujiro Fukushima, who taught him how to work in the darkroom, etc. After working in the commercial photography industry, Igarashi became a freelance photographer in 1998 and focuses on photographing cities and indigenous people in and out of Japan. In 2010, he began visiting and photographing sacred temples in India where people with disabilities and difficulties gather. His work was selected for the Tokyo Photobook Review in 2020 and a photobook for this body of work was published in 2023 under the title “Spiral Code”.
