Zen Foto Gallery is delighted to present “Showa 99”, an exhibition of photographs and installation by Kazuyoshi Usui from Friday, December 6 to Saturday, December 28, 2024.

Starting with “Showa 88”, Usui’s first solo exhibition at Zen Foto Gallery back in 2011, “Showa 99” is the fourth instalment of the Showa series. He revealed that “Showa 99” was inspired by Federico Fellini’s film, “La Dolce Vita”, which portrays the protagonist’s inner conflict between his freewheeling lifestyle and deep-seated religious beliefs. Usui suggests that this resonates with the fact that both the sacred and the profane can coexist within an individual.

The Showa Tetralogy presents a parallel reality of what it would have been like if the Showa period (1926–1989) had continued in Japan. It begins with a questioning of the polarisation of right and wrong caused by the self-imposed restrictions of modern conformity. It is born out of a longing for the Showa way of life, which was a mixture of the pure and the impure, struggling to survive in an age of confusion and chaos.

The series, which took more than ten years to complete, is set in the places where Usui grew up and which still retains vestiges of the fading Showa era. Still, it does not indulge in nostalgia but instead gives the impression that the Showa era has continued uninterrupted into the present day.

Usui’s photographs depict places like those in underground films, and the people who live there, the marginal people, the signs of the place, or the world in the photographer’s imagination, leaving the viewer wondering whether the images are reality or a staged scene. The tragicomic mix of fantasy-like reality and fiction allows viewers to construct their own imaginary story that unfolds between the photographs. Embedded in Usui’s images are the contradictions and dual conflicts that are inherent in human nature, such as “the indecent and the sublime”, “the horrific and the comic”, “the East and the West”, “the false and the real”, and “life and death”.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Zen Foto Gallery has published a photobook under the same title. On December 7, starting at 2pm, the gallery will host a talk session between the artist and photographer Risaku Suzuki, who is also a member of the artist collective “Photography? End?”.

Kazuyoshi USUI

Born in Tokyo, 1975, Usui graduated from Tokyo Polytechnic University, Department of Photography in 1998 and studied under the pioneering photographer Hosoe Eikoh. He lives and works in Tokyo, Japan. His past solo exhibitions include “Macaroni Christian” (Konica Minolta Plaza Gallery, 1996), “Showa 88” (Zen Foto Gallery, 2011 and Shadai Gallery 2013), “Showa 92” (Zen Foto Gallery, 2015), “Showa 88-95” (KKAG, 2018), and “Showa 96” (Zen Foto Gallery, 2019).

Usui has also participated in numerous group exhibitions including “San Marino International Photomeeting” in 1997, “In & Out” at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, “A Vision of Japan” at Galleri Balder, Oslo, “Inside Out: Through Japanese and Israeli Lenses” at TEO Center for Culture, Art and Content, Herzliya, and “Focus” at Schaefer International Gallery, Maui Arts & Culture Center.

His main publications are “Macaroni Christian” (Bijutsu Shuppan, 2006), “Showa 88” (Zen Foto Gallery, 2011), “Showa 92” (Zen Foto Gallery, 2015), “Showa 96” (Zen Foto Gallery, 2019), and “Photography? End?” (Magic Hour Edition, 2022). In 2015 he was responsible for the planning and cinematography of the movie “The 14th Dalai Lama”. Usui’s works are included in public collections such as Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts in Yamanashi, Tokyo Polytechnic University, and the Amana Collection, Tokyo.
