New Zen Foto Book Series Launch Exhibition THREE CITIES—Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong

Zen Foto Gallery is pleased to present a launch exhibition for its new book series from June 5 to 27. While Zen Foto’s previous publications have been produced with different specifications every time according to the work, the new series is in a fixed 20cm square format. For the first round, Zen Foto is releasing “Tokyo Modern Pictorial” by Issei Suda, “Shanghai” by Hiroyuki Nakada and “No Teacher But I Can Take Photos” by Chow san. This group exhibition will show a selection of photographs taken by the 3 photographers—from 3 different generations—in 3 different cities: Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Artist Profile

Issei SUDA

Born in Tokyo in 1940. From 1967 to 1970 he worked as the cameraman of the theatrical group Tenjo Sajiki, under Shuji Terayama. He won the 16th Domon Ken Award by his work “Human Memory（人間の記憶）”. His main works are “Fushi kaden”, “Waga-Tokyo 100”, “Ningen no kioku”, “Min'yo sanga” etc..

Hiroyuki Nakada

Born in Kanagawa prefecture in 1960, Nakada moved to Shanghai in 1999 and began photographing people on the streets of Shanghai since 2008. In 2016, he exhibited “Shanghai” at Place M, and continued his exhibitions “Passerby A” (2017) “Five Eyes” (2018) and “Four Limbs and Five Organs” (2019) at the same venue. Nakada is also actively participating in exhibitions and photo festivals overseas. In 2018 he held his exhibition “Five Eyes” at Machine House Brewery in Seattle, USA and participated in Shanghai International Photo Festival, 1st China Naiman Camel Bell on Silk Road International Photo Festival, and Yixian International Photo Festival in the same year.

Chow san

Born in Hong Kong in 1982, Chow began photographing in 2010. He participated in Hong Kong International Photo Festival’s “Dozens of photography works - 100FT.PARK's Special” in 2013, and was selected as one of the finalists of the 2nd Hong Kong Photo Book Awards in 2014. In 2015, his first solo exhibition “the flower” was held in ACO Book in Hong Kong. He self-published his first photobook “Day Trip” in 2018 and the works were exhibited at Kubrick. He also self-published his second book “Japanese photograph” in 2018 and a zine titled “Medical Research Report 2019” in 2019. In 2020, his zine “the flower” was published as one of the “Dying City” series by Mark Pearson. After the release of “No Teacher But I Can Take Photographs” with Zen Foto this year in 2020, Chow has exhibited his works at HK feature territory and Kubrick, Hong Kong.
